In Traditional Chinese medicine, TCM, qì can be defined as a circulating life force. Within the body, qì flows like water. If something prevents the natural flow of water, the water becomes murky and stagnant. There is nowhere for the water to go, so it pools. Same thing happens in the body. If qì does not circulate properly within, it then gives rise to pathology. Therefore, a medical qì gōng practitioner’s role is to connect with the nervous system, observe the flow of the patients qì, address tension and holding patterns, and integrate a change within the nervous system. In doing so, this assists the body back to homeostasis while also restoring the rhythm of the patient’s qì. My definition of medical qì gōng is, “An interactive, holistic approach to healing. With roots woven in TCM, medical qì gōng is another modality used to address symptoms as well as the cause of a disease. I have a curious, playful, intuitive nature. I bring awareness to the body, and hold space for it to return to its natural rhythm and flow.
